Researching in San Antonio: Central Library’s Texana/Genealogy Department

San Antonio Central Library’s 6th floor Texana/Genealogy Department hosts an impressive collection of materials: 60,000 microforms, 75,000 books, 110 drawers of archival files, 11 map cabinets, and 300 cubic feet of archival collections. Located in downtown San Antonio at 600 Soledad Street, the Texana/Genealogy Department is an important research destination, especially for those researching San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, or Hispanic roots.

The Texana Collection includes San Antonio newspapers, newspapers from the 19th and 20th centuries for a number of Texas towns, Mission and San Fernando sacramental records, service records of Texas units in the Mexican-American War and Civil War, microfilmed county records from Bexar and fifteen surrounding counties, and much more. The Genealogy Collection includes materials from all states, Canada, Mexico, and other countries plus county records and county histories from across the United States, Antebellum Southern Plantation records, and more. Other records to search include the Archives and Special Collections.
